Below are some common issues we've seen with technology for Jr High students. Click on any of these questions to see information on how to fix the problem.

I need to install Office on my laptop

First things first: make sure you're going to the correct site to log in. You should go to

login.microsoftonline.com

You'll be presented with a Microsoft login box unless you're already logged in to Canvas, at which point you'll go straight to your Office 365 Home page. Your login information is the same as your login for Canvas.

Your email address is usually your last name, first initial, two digit HS graduation year @bmcss.org (i.e. lastnamef24@bmcss.org)

If you do not have your login information (it should be the same as Canvas) contact Mr. Langelett at slangelett@bmcss.org.

Once you're logged in, you should see a button in the upper right corner of the page that says "Install Office". Click that, then "Office 365 Apps"

I can't log in to Canvas

You'll be presented with a Microsoft login box unless you're already logged in to Office 365, at which point you'll go straight to your Canvas dashboard. Your login information is the same as your login for Office 365.

I can't access my email/Office 365

First things first: make sure you're going to the correct site to log in. You should go to

I'm missing Canvas emails or other emails from teachers

There is a Focused Inbox "feature" in Office 365 that tries to present only the most important email to you...but it's not a perfect system. You should turn off Focused Inbox AND Conversation view. This will likely give you all your incoming email with less confusion.

In Office 365, go into your email and click on the picture of the gear in the upper right corner (shown below). Make the changes shown in the following picture.

I can't access Lockdown Browser

If you still need to download Lockdown Browser, click here. That link is specific to our school, so it will install and set up for our students only.

After it has downloaded, you'll need to install it (continue to move through installation by clicking "Yes", "Next", "I accept...", etc.)

If Lockdown Browser fails to start, starts and closes right away, or starts and can't access the internet, it might be blocked by an antivirus program. The program most known for this is McAfee Livesafe. To find out if this is the problem, download the following guide and follow the steps in it. When you get to Programs and Features, you'll be looking for McAfee Livesafe (or other McAfee programs). As the instructions say, click the McAfee program and click Uninstall near the top of that window.

I can't access Google Classroom activities or Google Drive documents

The Google family of websites (Google, Youtube, Google Classroom, among others) are pretty unique because they will allow you to be signed into multiple accounts at the same time. This is usually what causes problems with accessing Google activities in Canvas.

Because this is a pretty common problem, we have a guide on how to log out of all Google accounts and "start over" to be able to access Google activities in Canvas.

NOTE: If you follow the above guide and you receive a "Request Access" message in Canvas, go back to http://classroom.google.com and use your school email address and password to log in, then return to Canvas and refresh the page.
Your Google account is connected to Office 365/Canvas, so if you are logged into either of those sites, you might not be asked for a password after you enter your email address in the Google login window. It may ask you to confirm that you are connecting to the correct account (this should be your email address)

I can't install other programs on my Windows laptop and I see a message about Windows S Mode

Windows S Mode was a nice concept, but in actual practice it will prevent you from installing most other software on your laptop. We've put together a guide for students to be able to switch Windows out of S Mode so they can install other software.

I need to take a screenshot

If you need to get a screenshot to send your teacher to show them what you're seeing, there is a process to copy a picture of your screen so that you can paste it into an email or other document:
  1. You might have a "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. This could be abbreviated PrtScr or PrtSc. If you have this button, press it and a copy of your screen is copied to the clipboard, which means it is ready for you to paste somewhere. On a Macbook, you probably don't have that button. However, if you hold Contol, Command, Shift, and press the number 3 key, it does the same thing.
    If you're running Windows 10, you can also hold the Windows key, Shift, and press S and you'll have the option to "draw" a rectangular area on the screen to copy.

  2. Once you've "copied" your screen, you can paste it into an email or other program as you normally would (Ctrl + V or on a Macbook Command + V)
